The Power of Self-Surrender
Posted: October 10th, 2009 | Author: Jay Her | Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments »Surrender to Yourself is what I’d like to tell everyone. We have all grown up with expectations of ourselves. Boys do this, Girls do that. Boys wear this, Girls wear that. Boys act like this, Girls act like that. So on… As a child we have grown to take most, maybe even all, of those as our principles to live by. Few of us are able to find that we fit perfectly into these expectations. The rest of us are wondering who came up with all of those stupid ideas and supposed norms. Wondering about why don’t we act the “proper” way, why don’t I like the “proper” things… why can’t I fit into that “Box of Norms”.
Now I’m not asking you to completely go against the norm, that is in doing the extreme opposite which will (in the long run) get you asking the same questions you are asking about certain aspects of your life now. I am asking you to understand that society has created the “Box of Norms” to try and make life easier for us… not realizing that nothing is ever solid. And so we thrive in the areas that we fit into, but are left dangling out of the sides that don’t fit quite as well.
Now what happens when I surrender to myself? In your Surrender to Yourself you will allow yourself to begin developing, living and enjoying the life that you want to live… not just the life that the Box of Norms expect you to. You will find your life transforming into one that is more fulfilling, enjoyable and easier to live, as you realize each of the items that is truly yours to live and not something expected of you to meet.
How do I begin to surrender to myself? Simply asking yourself:
What about this makes my life more enjoyable?
What about this must I do to keep my life enjoyable?
What about this can change/replace and still keep my life enjoyable?
Your answers to these three simple questions will give you a good insight into what you should to keep in your life. Here is the catch though… I want you to start asking that to as many aspects of your life as possible. Also, don’t just give yourself a quick answer when you ask these questions, but disect and analyze the aspect of your life that you are asking about and find out the small little details that should keep, must do, or change/replace.
A small example, I was drinking soda all my life and then, it seems, in my teens everytime I drank a soda I would get headaches. I couldn’t realize why that was happening and for a good while I stopped drinking soda all together (which was probably a win win situation for myself, health wise) but then I realized that other items were giving me headaches too; such as candies, caramel apple, etc… At first I thought it was caffiene, then I thought it was the way it was made and then so on. I kept asking myself, what was causing the headaches? What can I change? What was good? What must I do? After a few years, I ended up with alot of good feedback from myself and many other individuals and it turned out to be that caramel was the factor that was causing the headaches. With that in mind, I just made sure the sodas I was drinking were caramel free, no more caramel apples, and limit myself on the candies that have caramel in it.
Take action for yourself and seek out what it is that makes your life more enjoyable. Don’t worry about trying to make big changes in your life, but simply avoid the things that make you feel negatively and pursue more thoroughly those that invite a little more joy into your life. As simple as asking the three questions from earlier while seeking out what brings joy into every aspect of your life (no matter how big or small) you can begin to notice a better more enjoyable life for yourself.
PS - remember that all aspect of your life doesn’t mean just broad/general things like your job or your personal life. It means small little things like walking vs. driving, going outside vs. staying home, doing it now vs. doing it later, cooking vs. eating out, fast-food vs. restaurant, say yes vs. say no, etc…
And so it begins…
